02: Planning the Evaluation, Scales of Measurement and Data, and Writing Research Questions

Welcome to Module 2! In this module, we will learn about the different types of data and research questions, and begin writing research questions! Writing research questions is an iterative process. It is normal to be confused and overwhelmed.

The resources below are meant to supplement not replace the official course materials.

There are 4 types of data or scales of measurement: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. The type of data collected determines the statistical analysis options available.

After choosing a topic you are required to formulate a research question. A good research question should be rooted in your topic, while also leaving the topic wide enough that you have room to explore the topic.

Research questions are important, but can be difficult to start.

Two common frameworks for research questions are the PS model and the PICOT model. The PS model is used with qualitative data and examines the patient/population and the situation.

PICOT Framework for Qualitative Research

The PICOT model is frequently used to answer quantitative research questions. This model includes the following elements: population/patients/problems, intervention, comparison, the outcome of the interest, and timeframe.

The W02: Writing Research Questions quiz is due at the end of the week. The quiz will include both multiple choice and free-response questions. You will be asked to identify concepts as well as demonstrate your understanding of the material by drafting research questions on the topics specified on the quiz.
