Data entry, or the process of taking data from the instrument and putting it in a format that can be analyzed, can be both time consuming and expensive. Data entry techniques, time, and cost depend heavily on the method of data collection.


Once the data is entered, it needs to be “coded” or put into a format that can be analyzed using statistical software programs. Coding is a process by which categorical or string variables (variables with words) are transformed into numbers.
